Western Uganda, July–September 2025: The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), through the Department of Mines led by Commissioner Agnes Alaba, and supported by the Police Mineral Protection Unit (PMPU) under ACP Caesar Tusingwire, has intensified Operation Zaabu to curb illegal mining and mineral smuggling across Ankole and Kigezi.
The coordinated operations in Ankole and Kigezi and border areas with Rwanda and Tanzania targeted hotspots for tin, wolfram, and lithium smuggling. Interventions included patrols, inspections, checkpoints, and community sensitization. Illegal sites such as Ruborogota were shut down, and compliance checks were conducted on licensed operators including ZY55 and H5 Resources.
Notably, several illegal operators were arrested, including a Chinese national, Cong He, found with explosives and unlicensed equipment. Authorities also recovered mineral samples, documents, and laptops with evidence of illicit trade.
Engagements with local leaders and Woodcross Smelting Company underscored MEMD’s commitment to transparency, safety, and sustainable resource management.
