Welcome to this edition of the Energy and Extractives Newsletter, a publication of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD). The past quarter has been dynamic, marked by milestones that reflect Uganda’s steady progress in harnessing its energy and mineral wealth for national development.
In the extractives sector, we witnessed President Museveni commissioning the Wagagai Gold Mine and Refinery, while Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa opened the 14th Annual Mineral Wealth Conference.
Strengthened bilateral ties with Kenya and the UK promise greater investment opportunities, as do MEMD’s engagements with international partners and the release of the Karamoja aerial survey results. Efforts to formalize artisanal and small-scale mining and clamp down on illegal operations underscore our commitment to accountability and sustainability.
On the energy front, significant developments include the commissioning of the Nyagak III hydropower dam, the arrival of EACOP’s final pipe shipment, consultations on the Nakasongola Nuclear Project, and the fast-tracking of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Bill. Uganda also hosted the 11th Annual GIS Conference and demonstrated clean cooking technologies to national leaders.
