Luwero, Uganda – 28th September 2025: In a colourful ceremony at the annual Mary Magdalen Day celebrations, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Can. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, officially launched the Government’s Clean Cooking Programme in Luwero Diocese.
The event, held at Nakasongola Archdeaconry, attracted women leaders, clergy, government officials, and development partners.
In her sermon, Dr. Nankabirwa encouraged the women of Luwero Diocese to emulate their patron saint. “As women, we must live exemplary lives in both word and deed. It is because of her faith and actions that we celebrate this day,” she said.
She emphasized that the Clean Cooking Programme is a key government initiative aimed at conserving the environment and protecting health. “The smoke women inhale while cooking with traditional stoves is dangerous to their lungs. We urge you to adopt and embrace these new clean cooking alternatives,” she added.
Luwero Diocese, which covers Nakasongola, Nakaseke, and Luwero districts, is the first in the country to benefit from this programme. British High Commissioner to Uganda, H.E. Lisa Chesney, who attended the event, commended the initiative. “Women are powerful champions when involved in campaigns, and today’s message has reached the right audience. We shall continue supporting Government in promoting clean cooking programmes throughout the country,” she affirmed.
The celebration, organised jointly by MEMD and Luwero Diocese with support from UECCC, NREP, and CCU, was graced by the Rt. Rev. Wilson Kiseka, Bishop of Luwero Diocese and Mama Rachael Kiseka, as well as senior officials including Dr. Brian Isabirye (Commissioner, ERD), Mr. Denis Kaggwa (AC/HRM), Mr. Roy Baguma (MD, UECCC), Eng. Herbert Abigaba, Ms. Akumu Justine, Ms. Blessing Ahikiriza, Ms. Susan Nalwoga, and Mr. Lazarus Oketcho.
The Mary Magdalen Day Celebrations bring together Anglican women annually to celebrate their patron and reflect on her legacy of faith and service.
