Protea Hotel: 18 August 2025: The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has held an inception workshop to launch Uganda’s PCB Child Project under the global initiative to eliminate Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) by 2028. Participants included MEMD, NEMA, UETCL, UEGCL, UEDCL, NEC, KIS, WENRECO, and transformer manufacturers.
The initiative will focus on three components: Strengthening regulation, enforcement, and PCB inventory completion; Replacement, treatment, and disposal of contaminated equipment and waste, and Stakeholder engagement, knowledge management, and program coordination.
Opening the workshop, Ms. Carol Aguti, representing the Permanent Secretary, commended stakeholders for their commitment, emphasizing the need for a PCB-free Uganda to protect health, the environment, and ensure a cleaner, sustainable electricity sector.
