Nyagak, Zombo District, 1 Aug, 2025: The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Canon Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, accompanied by the Minister of State for Minerals, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, officially commissioned the Nyagak III Hydropower Plant, injecting 6.6MW of clean energy into Uganda’s national grid. The ceremony marked the start of commercial operations for the government-led project, a major boost to West Nile’s power supply.
Hon. Nankabirwa described the project as “a transformative milestone for Uganda’s energy infrastructure,” assuring that Nyagak III will deliver one of the lowest tariffs among hydropower plants. She highlighted its wide-reaching benefits, including improved electricity access and reliability, reduced load shedding, and opportunities for regional trade and market growth. The project is also expected to catalyze rural development, expand the tax base, and enhance government revenue, contributing to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation and industrialization agenda.
The commissioning was attended by representatives from Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), Genmax Nyagak Ltd, Ker Alur Kingdom, and other stakeholders. Guests toured the dam, generation facilities, control, and switch rooms before unveiling the foundation stone and cutting the commissioning ribbon amid great celebration.
Located 15 kilometers from Paidha Town near the Uganda–DRC border, Nyagak III was developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework between MEMD, UEGCL, and private developers. Its completion demonstrates Uganda’s commitment to expanding access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy in line with Vision 2040 and the goal of universal electricity access.
