Alupe, Busia District, Saturday, 16th August 2025: H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni commissioned the Wagagai Gold Mining Project in Alupe, Busia District, marking a landmark step in Uganda’s efforts to refine gold and other minerals locally.
The project is set to achieve 99.9% gold purity, create over 5,000 jobs, and generate more than USD 100 million annually over the next 21 years.
“Under my leadership as President, Uganda will no longer export raw minerals; we shall process them locally and use our natural wealth to industrialize and secure our future,” President Museveni affirmed.

The President commended the company for heeding his call on value addition in mineral exploitation. On her part, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Can. Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa, expressed gratitude to the President for his guidance and unwavering support in establishing the company and for gracing the commissioning. She further outlined key achievements in Uganda’s mineral sector and applauded the teamwork within her Ministry that has propelled the sector forward
