Kihumuro Campus MUST, Mbarara, 15 August 2025: The Estates and Works Committee of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) has approved the establishment of the National Nuclear Fuel Resources Analytical Laboratory at the university’s Kihumuro Campus in Mbarara City.
The approval followed a presentation by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development team led by the Commissioner for Nuclear Energy, Eng. Simon T. Kalanzi. The proposed laboratory will provide state-of-the-art analytical services essential for the sustainable development of nuclear fuel resources under Uganda’s nuclear power programme. It will also support research, innovation, and quality assurance in nuclear material analysis.
During the engagement, Eng. Kalanzi emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in enhancing national analytical capabilities for nuclear resource development. The Vice Chancellor of MUST welcomed the government’s initiative and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the successful implementation of the project.
The committee endorsed the project and pledged to facilitate the allocation of 10 acres of land at Kihumuro Campus for its establishment.
