Petroleum House, Entebbe, 14 August 2025: The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, inaugurated a new Board of Directors for the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) on 14th August 2025, following the expiry of the previous board’s 10-year term as provided by law.
The new board is chaired by Ms. Lydia Ochieng Obbo, with members including Dr. Brian Isabirye (MEMD), Mr. Christopher Mugisha, Ms. Stella Marie Biwaga Cingtho, Ms. Florence Namatta Mawejje, Mr. Ben Ojok, and Mr. Stephen Emasu.
In her remarks, the Minister congratulated the board and outlined their key responsibilities: providing strategic oversight, ensuring good governance, regulatory compliance, financial accountability, risk management, operational oversight, and effective stakeholder engagement. She emphasized that the reconstitution of the board demonstrates government’s commitment to implementing the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV), which prioritizes Agriculture, Tourism, Mining, and Science & Technology.
Earlier, the Minister met with the outgoing UEDCL board, commending them for successfully overseeing the reversion of major concessions to government, including the Namanve Thermal Power Plant, Nalubaale Hydropower Plant (formerly under Eskom), and UMEME.
The State Minister for Energy, Hon. Sidronius Okasaai Opolot, in his closing remarks, congratulated the new board and urged collective effort in delivering on their mandate.
The event was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Eng. Irene Bateebe, UEDCL Managing Director Mr. Paul Mwesigwa, and representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, among others.
