Kampala, 25 September 2025: The 11th Annual GIS Conference opened today at the Mestil Hotel, Kampala, under the theme “Mapping Uganda’s Energy Future: Smart Data, Smart Decisions.” Organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) in collaboration with the Energy Sector GIS Working Group (ESGWG), the event convened regulators, planners, geospatial experts, and development partners to explore the role of GIS in advancing Uganda’s energy transition.
Delivering the keynote on behalf of the Minister and Permanent Secretary, Mr. Okurut Felix, Assistant Commissioner M&E, emphasized GIS as a backbone of smart energy planning, enabling mapping of renewable resources, identification of underserved communities, and fostering sustainable, inclusive access.
Since its inception in 2011, the ESGWG has standardized geospatial data collection, strengthened inter- agency collaboration, and enhanced informed decision-making for investment and climate resilience. The 2025 conference focuses on advancing data sharing, uniform geospatial standards, and institutional capacity to meet tomorrow’s energy challenges. Attendees include MEMD, ERA, UETCL, UEDCL, UEGCL, PAU, and other key stakeholders.
