Best Western Premier Hotel, 25 August 2025: Uganda reaffirmed its leadership in mineral governance by hosting two ICGLR workshops.
The first, held in Entebbe 21–22 August, validated the revised Regional Guide for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) formalization. MEMD PS Eng. Irene Bateebe emphasized transparency, sustainability, and livelihoods, noting formalization curbs fraud, protects the environment, and supports communities.
The revised guide includes mercury reduction in line with the Minamata Convention and gender inclusion, as women form 45% of ASM workers. A technical working group was elected to advance reforms. Uganda’s ASM employs 30,000 miners, supports two million, and contributed 1.9% to GDP.
