The Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Hon. Can. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, has concluded a two-day inspection tour of key infrastructure sites under the Kampala Metropolitan Transmission System Improvement Project, reaffirming Government’s commitment to strengthening Uganda’s electricity transmission network and improving power reliability within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The inspection, conducted on 9–10 May 2026, covered the Bujagali, Mukono, Namungoona, Mutundwe and Maya (Buloba) substations, together with associated transmission line connections being developed under the project.
Implemented by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) with support from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project is one of Uganda’s most strategic transmission infrastructure investments aimed at modernising and reinforcing the transmission network serving Kampala and surrounding urban and industrial growth centres.
During the visit, the Minister assessed progress across the project sites and received updates on implementation timelines and operational readiness.
Project reports indicate that works are nearing completion at several substations, including Maya, Bujagali and Mukono, with overall progress remaining on track. contractors, engineers and project teams for the steady progress registered and emphasized the critical role of transmission infrastructure in supporting Uganda’s industrialisation agenda.
“Uganda continues to expand electricity generation capacity, and it is therefore critical that we strengthen the transmission backbone to ensure reliable delivery of power to industries, businesses and households,” she said.
The Minister noted that the project will significantly reduce network congestion, improve voltage stability and support growing electricity demand in the Kampala metropolitan area and beyond.
The inspection coincided with Mother’s Day celebrations, during which the Minister was presented with a bouquet of flowers and joined project teams in a brief appreciation ceremony.
