The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has launched the Uganda Biogas and Electric Cooking Project (UBEP), a flagship initiative designed to accelerate Uganda’s transition to clean cooking solutions.
The project was launched during a two-day technical mission in Kampala that brought together government officials, development partners, private sector actors and clean cooking stakeholders to review implementation arrangements and strengthen coordination ahead of project rollout.
Representing the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Brian Isabirye, Commissioner for Energy Efficiency and Conservation, described UBEP as a major milestone in implementing Uganda’s National Clean Cooking Strategy and Energy Compact. He emphasized that clean cooking is critical for addressing energy poverty reducing environmental degradation, improving public health and advancing gender equality.
The mission concluded with discussions on governance, procurement, financial management, environmental safeguards and performance monitoring to ensure effective project implementation.
UBEP is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric cooking technologies, expand institutional biogas systems, strengthen private sector participation and unlock carbon financing opportunities.
The project is also anticipated to create green jobs, stimulate local enterprise development and contribute to Uganda’s climate commitments under the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The initiative supports Government’s target of achieving universal access to clean cooking solutions by 2040 while reducing reliance on traditional biomass fuels
