Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to developing geothermal energy during the 3rd Geothermal Development Company (GDC) Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 4–7 May 2026.
Held under the theme “Driving Innovation and Affordable Energy: Geothermal Solutions for a Sustainable Future,” the conference brought together policymakers, investors, development partners and technical experts to explore opportunities in geothermal development, financing and regional cooperation.
Representing the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Mr. Vincent Kato, Ag. Commissioner for Geothermal Resources Development, presented Uganda’s geothermal development progress and highlighted the country’s significant resource potential, particularly within the Western Rift Valley.
The conference also provided an opportunity for Uganda to learn from Kenya’s successful geothermal development model.
Delegates visited the Menengai Geothermal Project, where Government led investments in exploration, drilling and steam development have helped attract private sector participation and accelerate project implementation.
Through ongoing cooperation under the Uganda–Kenya Memorandum of Understanding, Uganda continues to benefit from technical training, capacity building and knowledge exchange aimed at accelerating geothermal exploration and development as part of the country’s long-term energy diversification strategy
