The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) has officially unveiled the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) for Phase II of the Uganda Geothermal Resources Development Project, marking an important milestone in the country’s efforts to advance geothermal energy development.
The establishment of the PIU comes as Project 1854 transitions into the critical Project Execution and Control phase, which will oversee the implementation of key project activities aimed at unlocking Uganda’s geothermal potential.
The multidisciplinary team will be responsible for coordinating project implementation, monitoring progress, ensuring compliance with technical, environmental and financial requirements, and supporting effective stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle.
Uganda is estimated to possess approximately 1,500MW of geothermal energy potential, particularly within the Western Rift Valley.
Development of these resources is expected to contribute to energy diversification, strengthen energy security and support the country’s long-term industrialisation agenda.
The unveiling of the PIU demonstrates Government’s commitment to strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring effective delivery of strategic energy projects that will support sustainable national development.
