The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), through the Geothermal Resources Department (GRD), has commenced the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) and Livelihood Restoration Study for the proposed Panyimur Deep Geothermal Drilling Project.
The exercise was officially launched by the Ag. Commissioner for Geothermal Resources Development, Mr. Vincent Kato, during a project inception meeting with the appointed RAP consultants.
He noted that Uganda possesses an estimated 1,500MW of geothermal energy potential and described the Panyimur project as a key step towards diversifying the country’s renewable energy portfolio and strengthening long-term energy security.
The RAP study is a critical prerequisite for the drilling of four deep exploration wells and will assess potential social impacts, document land ownership and socioeconomic conditions, and ensure fair compensation and livelihood restoration for project-affected persons in accordance with national laws and international standards.
Following the launch, a joint team of Ministry officials and consultants conducted a reconnaissance visit to Pakwach District, engaging local government leaders, cultural institutions and community representatives.
Stakeholders expressed strong support for the project and committed to working closely with Government to ensure a transparent and inclusive process.
The study marks another important milestone in Uganda’s efforts to unlock its geothermal resources and advance sustainable energy development.
