The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) participated in a high-level engagement aimed at advancing reconciliation efforts following the tragic killing of Ugandan geologists and UPDF soldiers in the Karamoja sub-region.
The engagement was attended by the Vice President of Uganda, H.E. Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, and the Kenyan Special Presidential Envoy, Hon. John Munyes Kiyonga, who delivered a special message from H.E. President William Ruto to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Speaking during the meeting, Vice President Alupo conveyed President Museveni’s appreciation to President Ruto for his personal commitment to resolving the matter through diplomatic engagement and regional cooperation.
The initiative is being implemented through an inter-ministerial committee applying the traditional Ateker reconciliation framework known as Okukaraba.
The committee comprises representatives from several government institutions, including MEMD.
The Ministry is represented by Ms. Loyola R. Karobwa from the Legal Unit, with technical guidance from Dr. Alex Fred Tugume, Commissioner for Geological Survey and Mines, and Mr. Isaiah Tumwiikirize, former Coordinator of the Karamoja Geophysical Surveys Project. The initiative seeks to promote healing, strengthen cross-border cooperation and support peaceful resource development in the region.
