The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), together with a delegation from the International Solar Alliance (ISA), visited Luwero District to assess the impact of solar-powered irrigation systems on farming community
The visit formed part of Uganda’s efforts to promote the productive use of renewable energy and support agricultural transformation through climate-smart technologies.
Solar-powered irrigation systems installed in Luwero, Nakaseke and Nakasongola are helping farmers overcome dependence on seasonal rainfall, improve productivity and increase household incomes.
Speaking during the visit, ISA Director General Mr. Ashish Khanna commended Uganda’s commitment to integrating renewable energy into agriculture, noting that solar irrigation is contributing to food security, climate resilience and rural development.
Beneficiary farmers reported significant improvements in crop production, with some transitioning from seasonal to year-round farming.
Preliminary project results indicate increased yields and reduced irrigation costs compared to traditional diesel-powered systems.
The delegation also met district leaders and local stakeholders, reaffirming the importance of partnerships in expanding access to clean energy solutions that support sustainable livelihoods and economic growth.
